The San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival was established in 2003. The main mission of
this entity at that time was to promote jazz music to the public by presenting three great jazz artists featured in three
free jazz concerts. The second mission was to help support a worthy nonprofit organization by donating a portion of SAS FEST's
proceeds to that organization. Originally the first year's donations were focused on the American Cancer Association and the
American Heart Association.
In 2004 SAS FEST added three more
concerts to its event and now presented six free jazz concerts featuring six great jazz artist. SAS FEST commitment to educating
and developing new audiences for jazz music lead to the first Latin jazz night dedicating one night exclusivley
to presenting Latin Jazz Musical Artists. SAS FEST also began to pick and expose new local jazz artist during its event, therefore
helping give a new group a chance to be exposed to the public. Besides donating a portion of its proceeds to the American
Cancer Association SAS FEST now donated a portion of its proceeds to Any Baby Can, ABC. ABC is a nonprofit organization that provides services free of charge to families with children,
from birth through 12 years of age, who have serious illnesses, disabilities and/or special needs.
In 2005 the San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz
Festival named A.B.C. as its exclusive charitable beneficiary and also decided to make promoting A.B.C. and its
causes part of SAS Fest's mission. SAS FEST added to its mission to help promote ABC and its causes. SAS FEST was also
host to about 18 children from the Ronald McDonald House. Most of these children have cancer and other illnesses. SAS Fest
provided an area and soft drinks for these children at its event.
In
2006 SAS FEST became a three-day event and produced 10 free concerts to the public and featured three-time Grammy Nominee
Acoustic Alchemy to its event. This was a major mildstone in SAS Fest's evolution. SAS FEST also introduced University
Jazz Night and hosted the first midnight jazz concerts, which were held at Sunset Station after the Friday night and Saturday
night's concerts at Crockett Park. SAS FEST held its 1st yearly midnight jazz concert party at the club Venue. The San
Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival was now a premiere event in San Antonio, Texas.
In 2007 the San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival featured Joseph Vincelli, Brenna'
and Freddie Ravel. Mr. Ravel who co-wrote and co-produced a CD with Al Jarreau and George Benson who won two Grammy
nominations in 2007. The appearance of Ravel at SAS FEST was another milestone as the festival was now quickly becoming known
for featuring the best performers in the jazz industry. SAS FEST provided dinner and a toy as as a keep sake for several children
from the Ronald McDonald House. SAS FEST also took a large leap forward in jazz education by providing two free jazz workshops
at its venue before the beginning of it's festival. These workshops were developed for young student musicians in middle
and high school and featured instruments associated with the style of jazz music. Although these workshops were aimed at underprivileged
school districts in San Antonio these workshops are open to any person interested in wanting to learn more about jazz music.
SAS FEST held its 2nd annual midnight jazz concert party at the Court at Sunset Station.
